Long-Term Capital Management (LTCM) was a notoriously high-flying American hedge fund that collapsed spectacularly in 1998, nearly taking the global financial system with it. Founded in 1994 by a “dream team” of Wall Street traders, including John Meriwether of Salomon Brothers fame, and two Nobel Prize-winning economists, Myron Scholes and Robert C. At its peak, the fund had leveraged about $4.7 billion of equity into over $125 billion in assets and had off-balance-sheet positions with a notional value of over $1.25 trillion.
