- A Downward Trend: A steadily declining margin is a serious warning. It suggests that competition is heating up, costs are spiraling out of control, or the company is losing its pricing power.
- Massively Out of Step with Peers: If a company’s margin is dramatically lower than its competitors, you must investigate why. Is it pursuing a temporary low-price strategy to gain market share, or is its business model fundamentally flawed?
- “Adjusted” Mania: Be cautious of companies that heavily promote “adjusted” or “pro-forma” operating margins that exclude what they call “one-time” costs. If these one-time costs happen every year, they aren't one-time—they're just costs! Always start your analysis with the official, GAAP-reported numbers.
