  • High Fixed Costs: All that machinery and all those factories lead to massive fixed costs, including huge bills for depreciation (the accounting charge for an asset's wear and tear).   • The Maintenance Treadmill: Assets get old. Technology becomes obsolete. A capital-intensive company must constantly spend money—known as maintenance capital expenditures—just to maintain its current level of production.
