A Defined-Contribution Plan is a type of retirement plan in which an employee, and often their employer, contribute money to an individual account for the employee. The key feature is in the name: the “contribution” is defined and known, but the final retirement benefit is not. The amount you have at retirement depends entirely on how much was contributed and, crucially, on the performance of the investments you choose within the plan. This puts the investment risk squarely on the employee's shoulders. What Happens When You Change Jobs?
